Housemaids Taking Care of the Elderly – Six Major Crises (Part 1)
2011-06-16

Hong Kong families in general shift the responsibilities of taking care of the elderly to housemaids. Some of the family members may sense that it should be a crisis that “Housemaids are not knowledgeable and experienced enough to take care of the elderly”, but they do not know how to better equip their maids. Thus, I, as the writer of this series of 6 episodes, would like to share my knowledge and skills with you through this platform.

The reasons for the causes of the accidents of the elderly are plenty. The common one is that “Housemaids don’t pay enough attention to their work”. In the past, it so happened that I saw some housemaids going out with the elderly, with one hand holding the phone and talking loudly, and with another hand helping the elderly to walk or even pushing the wheelchair. All these are so-called “caring”, but in fact, it is as dangerous as playing acrobatics. Once they are reckless, accidents may take place.

To avoid the housemaids from being inattentive, you and your housemaids can agree upon a list of rules and regulations of work. You can arrange her daily rest time, remind them to pay attention to work, regularly show your trust to them, allow them to understand the health conditions of the elderly, and foster more communication. All the above can ensure the elderly are being cared safe and sound.

In short, “Caring the elderly needs attention while reminding the housemaids demands patience”. I wish the above could be of some use to you!
